Xylem understands the life-cycle benefits of water conservation and offers products and services aimed at meeting this challenge. The company touches nearly every aspect of the water cycle, from collection to distribution and use. For example, in Kuwait, where approximately 75% of the country’s potable water must be distilled or imported, Xylem designed, built, and commissioned the aeration, pumping, and mixing system of the Sulaibiya wastewater plant. This is the world’s largest water reuse plant and it treats approximately 60% of Kuwait’s total domestic wastewater; the reclaimed water is then used for agricultural and industrial applications.
Xylem has a robust research and development program. It recently released the Flygt Experior pump for wastewater applications, which offers up to 50% energy savings compared with conventional pumps. While the company’s products and services have clear environmental benefits, Portfolio 21 has requested that Xylem increase transparency surrounding its direct environmental impacts.
