Swisscom
Switzerland
Swisscom is the leading telecommunications company in Switzerland and it has a deep commitment to the environment. As one former CEO, Tony Reis wrote, "Swisscom views environmentally-conscious corporate management as a strategic necessity, both for the benefit of the environment and the interests of the company and all those involved with it." One of the company's current guiding principles is sustainability "in accordance with the maxim 'live off interest, not capital.'" As a service company, Swisscom's procurement policies and practices are very important. The company exerts "eco-social pressure" on its immediate suppliers, as well as regularly assessing the ecological and social behavior of its key suppliers. The other key issue for Swisscom to address as a network operator is its energy use and CO2 emissions. The company has developed a strategy encompassing energy efficiency, renewable energy purchases, solar installations, and the incorporation of bio-fuels. We look forward to seeing Swisscom's progress in these areas, and encourage the company to provide more detailed reporting on energy use and efficiency data.
